Things to Know Before Cooking Peas With Asparagus?

Asparagus and peas are both bright green vegetables that are brimming with nutrients such as fiber and vitamin A. Both of these vegetables cook quickly and can be combined for several layers of flavor, as well as a boost of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The best way to cook asparagus and peas is by steaming them, which will retain more of the nutrients as well as create a crunchy texture. Seasoned with some herbs and spices, asparagus and peas is a delicious and nutritious side dish for grilled chicken, pasta salad or sandwiches.
Step 1
Wash your asparagus and peas with cool water.
Step 2
Set in a large colander to drain.
Step 3
Trim the tough stem portions from each asparagus spear using a sharp knife.
Step 4
Trim the ends of the peas, also using a sharp knife.
Step 5
Place the asparagus spears and trimmed peas into a steamer basket.
Step 6
Set the steamer basket over a large pot of water, making sure the vegetables do not come into contact with the water.
Step 7
Bring the water to a boil.
Step 8
Cover the pot with a lid and steam the vegetables until they are a bold green color but still slightly crunchy.
Step 9
Remove the asparagus and peas from the steamer basket and transfer to a large serving bowl.
Step 10
Drizzle with the olive oil and toss to coat.
Step 11
Add the salt, pepper, lemon zest and red pepper flakes and toss to combine.
Step 12
Serve hot with lemon wedges on the side, if desired.
Tips and Warnings
Add some diced onion or minced garlic to the asparagus and peas to enhance the flavor and add a bit more nutrition. Replace the red pepper flakes with any spices or herbs you like. Celery seed, garlic powder, rosemary, thyme and basil are some choices. A splash of soy sauce and minced fresh ginger is another combination for asparagus and peas. Sesame seeds or chopped walnuts will add some fiber and protein, as well as some crunch to your vegetables.
Do not overcook your asparagus and peas. They will lose their bright green color and will get mushy. Do not allow the boiling water to touch the asparagus and peas because it will boil the vegetables rather than steam them. Boiled vegetables are often too soft and lack the flavor of steamed vegetables.
