Kickboxing Benefits & Routines for Pre-Teens

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry reports that anywhere between 18 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are considered to be obese. According to MayoClinic.com, obesity affects more than a child's looks; it can also affect their self-esteem and their health as well. For preteens, exercises such as kickboxing are great ways to combat childhood obesity.
Taking the Plunge
Kickboxing is not for everyone. Check out a few kickboxing classes in your community before you enroll your child in a program. You may have to visit more than one martial arts facility before you find kickboxing classes that you are not only comfortable with but that your child wants to participate in and is within your budget as well. Encourage your child to try a class or two before making the decision as to whether or not kickboxing is something she is interested in long term.
Get Checked Out
KidsHealth encourages all children starting kickboxing to have a physical examination by a doctor. This is especially important for children with diabetes or asthma. It is also a good idea for children who are significantly overweight.
Start Slowly
KidsHealth recommends that preteens starting kickboxing for the first time start out slowly. It is a high-impact sport, and it can be easy to become tired too quickly or even injure yourself if you don't start off slowly. KidsHealth recommends that beginners experiment with low kicks and controlled movements to prevent the injuries that are so common with kickboxing amateurs who overdo it.
Benefits
Kickboxing can be a great way to lose weight. The American Council on Exercise reports that kickboxing for just an hour can burn anywhere between 350 and 450 calories. It is good for the heart and lungs and can help lower bad cholesterol as well.
Kickboxing can have emotional benefits for preteens as well. Children who are involved in kickboxing and other types of martial arts have more confidence and higher self-esteem. It can also be a useful skill for self-protection when applied correctly.
