Having a baby doesn't mean the adventure has to end. But leaving an infant ashore with a caregiver for almost a week -- or longer -- can be hard on parents, especially new parents. Now, many cruise lines are offering baby-friendly amenities that make it easy for parents to hit the high seas with baby in tow. But even with these new accommodations, a lot of preparation and planning must go into traveling with your baby.
Shop Around
- Compare cruise line policies and amenities. While some cruise lines allow small children to board, the age cutoff for family cruises is typically around 12 months. But others, such as Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Lines, welcome children as young as 12 weeks old. For an additional fee, these cruise lines also offer onboard nursery services to parents who want to catch a show or have a romantic dinner. If you are concerned about the onboard nursery fees racking up, look for lines that allow children under a certain age to travel free to balance the cost.
Upgrade Your Room
- When you choose your cabin, consider the amount of space you will need to comfortably care for your baby. Upgrade to a double room. Some cruise lines will provide a crib in lieu of the additional bed in the room. If you are concerned about relying on the cruise ship for a crib, ask the personnel to remove the bed to free up space for your own portable crib.
Baby Supplies
- Be sure to pack more diapers, formula, wipes and food than you think your baby will need for the duration of the trip. Many cruise lines do not sell these items in their stores and getting to a supermarket at the ports can be difficult. If you are concerned about traveling with your stroller, reserve one through the cruise line or opt for an infant carrier such as a sling or backpack.
Vaccines and Medications
- Make sure that all of his shots are up to date prior to cruising with your infant. Spending time in close quarters with a large number of people can put your baby at risk for infections. Also, bring medicines in case your child gets sick and the cruise line does not carry infant medication.
