Popular Upper Peninsula Michigan Cruises


    • The Upper Peninsula of Michigan, or the UP as natives call is, is a remote region filled with wildlife, nature and history. Cruises and boat rides stop to visit sites, such as lighthouses, maritime museums or the site of sunken ships. Specific cruises focus on shipwrecks or history. Most cruises are only available from May or June through October.

    • Pictured Rocks Cruises travel 37 miles along the Upper Peninsula of Michigan past sandstone cliffs and waterfalls. The cruise of Lake Superior begins at Munising, Michigan and travels to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Visitors can enjoy the narrated tours from inside a climate-controlled deck or an exterior observation deck. The cruise runs from Memorial Day to mid-October, weather permitting, and both morning and sunset tours are offered. Because of the scenic coastline, this cruise appeals to nature lovers and photographers.

    DeTour Reef Lighthouse Tours

    • The DeTour Reef Light Preservation Society takes travelers on small motor boat from the DeTour Harbor Marina to tour the Detour Reef Lighthouse. The lighthouse, which was built in 1847 and relocated offshore in 1931, is located at DeTour Reef, marking the mouth of St. Mary's River between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. The tours are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays in June, July and August and last for 2 1/2 hours. Groups are limited to five or six people, and reservations must be made months in advance. Groups can charter a private tour as well. Guests must be able to climb a 20-foot ladder to get to the pier.

    Shipwreck Tours

    • Shipwreck Tours in Lake Superior visits shipwrecks in the Alger Underwater Preserve and Grand Island. The wrecks are viewed through a glass-bottom boat. The glass viewing wall is 4 by 10 feet. Guests can peer over the side of the dive boat, but with limited visibility. Two of the ships viewed are the Bermuda and the Old Scow Schooner, which are wooden schooners over 130 feet long. The tour passes some of the rock formations and lighthouses in the area, as well as historic lakefront homes. The narrated cruise lasts for two hours and runs in the summer months only. The tours run seven days a week, leaving the dock at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 4 p.m. on most days. Reservations are needed at least one day in advance.
