- Cruises are a popular type of vacation, allowing tourists to escape from land to spend several days on the high seas. While cruises are fun and luxurious, they also create a lot of waste and pollution. As people try to make eco-friendly decisions at home, many are now looking to make environmentally responsible choices on vacation. To serve these needs, companies have created eco-friendly cruises.
Disney Cruise Lines
- All Disney Cruise Lines ships are making a difference on the ocean with conservation tactics. Heat produced on the ship is used to power evaporators that turn ocean water into drinkable water. Each ship has staff members teach environmental education classes to guests, and ships reuse cooking oil to power heavy machinery. The family cruise line also reduced emissions and lowered its total energy use. Disney cruises go to many destinations, including the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Alaska and the Pacific Coast, the Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal, the Transatlantic and Europe.Disney Cruise VacationsGuest CommunicationsP.O. Celebrity Solstice
- Celebrity Cruises' Solstice ship is one of the first to use solar panels to supply some of the power to run its lights and elevators. The Solstice ship also uses a water-filtration system to clean up waste water produced on the ship before it is dumped back into the ocean. While all of Celebrity Cruises' ships practice some conservation efforts, only the Solstice makes these extra efforts. The ship also recycles materials like aluminum and tin. The Solstice sails to the Eastern Caribbean, which includes Puerto Rico, St. Maarten and St. Thomas, and to the Western Caribbean, which includes stops in Grand Cayman, Honduras and Cozumel and Puerto Costa Maya in Mexico.Celebrity Cruises1080 Caribbean WayMiami, FL 33132800-647-2251celebritycruises.com
Holland America
- All of Holland America's cruise ships meet high environmental standards. Each ship has low-flow shower heads and faucets, and asks guests to reuse towels unless they request otherwise. The on-site laundry uses non-toxic, environmentally friendly detergents. All ships are also ISO14001 certified, which means that they adhere to an environmental management plan. No Holland America ships dump waste overboard. Holland America ships sail to numerous locations, including Alaska, Asia and the Pacific, Australia and New Zealand, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Tahiti, Mexico and South America.Holland America Line300 Elliott Ave. W.Seattle, WA 98119877-932-4259hollandamerica.com
